Today, KidUnity went to see Martin O’Malley’s rally at the Smokey Row Coffee Shop. Not only did the student reporters get to interview O’Malley fans rallying outside, but we also talked to Governor Martin O’Malley and Dr. Ben Carson! We even gave them high-fives! Gia and Sophia asked some hard questions that the candidates got stumped on:

O’Malley:

1. (Gia’s question) “Today we were looking at the polls and it stated that Clinton is at 45%, Sanders is at 42%, and O’Malley at 3%. If you were to drop out of the race, who would you want your supporters to go to?”

Answer: “I’m not answering poll questions. I’m not dropping out of the race and I want my supporters to stay strong because I am here to defy expectations. I want my supporters to talk to their friends in the caucus — usually the caucus doesn’t turn out the way the polls say. Polls shmolls!” (P.S. there was a girl in the background saying #Staystrong.)

Ben Carson:

1. (Sophia’s question): “How will you defeat ISIS?”

Answer: Carson said that we should study Islam to see why they are fighting us in the first place. We also need to deploy more soldiers in Iraq and Syria to fight them (Carson then started talking about how ISIS is a relatively new terrorist group and how they don’t have that much land. He also said how they didn’t have that much land during the Ottoman Empire — what?).

 

Last night, on the democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders both made there final speeches before the Iowa Caucus. KidUnity went to the Clinton rally to hear her speak. She spoke with passion and determination and expressed her amazing ideas. The people themselves were ecstatic while she spoke, and before she even came, people were chanting, “Iowa believes that she will win!”

She covered many important topics in her speech. For example, she gave us stats about why our country does much better with a democrat in office. The economy, healthcare, and environment are better with a democrat in the White House. Hillary talked about gun control, stated that she is pro-choice, and discussed other issues.

We will see if Clinton can beat Sanders in the Iowa Caucus tonight. Anything can happen and the polls show a very tight race.

Last night the entire KidUnity team attended Hillary Clinton’s final rally before the Iowa Caucuses. Hillary wasn’t the only person we got to see. We also got to see Tom Harkin and his wife, Ruth Harkin. Amazingly, Tom Harkin was the former Iowa senator! Two other people also made a huge appearance at the rally. Former President, Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea Clinton, talked about Hillary and how she was such an amazing person. They told us all about Hillary and how fantastic a person she was. They told us how she would never give up and how she was extremely prepared by being the Secretary of State! Then,  Hillary herself came and spoke. She talked about a very wide range of issues that she would solve. She said that she would solve the issue of equal pay for women. She talked about gun control. She talked about healthcare. Although Hillary talked about each issue thoroughly, one thing she mentioned repeatedly was how the Republicans would ruin the United States of America.

Overall, the Clinton Rally was very cool and seeing Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and their daughter, really inspired KidUnity.
